OTTAWA — Police in Ottawa have passed a new racial profiling policy nine months after a woman came forward claiming she was arrested and strip-searched because she was black.

Stacy Bonds, 27, announced she was suing police for $1.2-million after the September 2008 incident was first made public in November 2010.

Ottawa police have instituted new rules to prevent officers from engaging in racial profiling.

The force, which approved the new policy in late June, hopes to train all sworn officers by early this fall.

Red FM president Kulvinder Sanghera said the comments may have been misunderstood.

The Surrey Women’s Centre has filed a complaint with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission over a call-in show on Indo-Canadian radio station Red FM.

Spokesperson Corrine Arthur said the complaint centres around comments made by talk show host Harjinder Thind and several callers.
