Conservatives mull changes to citizenship rules for babies born on Canadian soil

It’s one of the oldest immigration tricks in the book: get pregnant, fly to another country, have your baby, and voila – you’ve got immigrant ties to said country.

It even happens in Canada.

According to the Toronto Sun, Ottawa has discovered a number of unscrupulous immigration consultants in Hong Kong, who are coaching wealthy Chinese mainlanders about how to keep their pregnancies hidden while entering Canada on student or visitor visas.

“Avoid any baby or maternity items in luggage, wear dark clothing going through customs to look slimmer, and arrive in Canada no later than in the seventh month of pregnancy are among the tips given,” notes the article.

VANCOUVER – Three townhouses in Richmond, B.C., are being used to house foreign nationals pregnant with “passport babies,” and are among numerous local housing destinations for birth tourists, a QMI Agency investigation has uncovered.

Advertised online in Chinese as the Pan Pan Pregnancy Centre, the Cook Road residences offer a haven to women from the one-child policy country. But they may be birth tourists in the eyes of the federal government, which has vowed to crack down on those exploiting a long-known loophole to citizenship that gives a passport to anyone born in our borders.

Ottawa police have charged two men in connection with a series of commercial break and enters across the region.

In early January, a series of overnight commercial break-ins across Ottawa were committed by two suspects wearing balaclavas. In all the break-ins, the suspects gained access by smashing the front entrance with a sledgehammer.

Toronto: Cordell Cartledge wanted for role in parking dispute shooting

On Friday, March 2, 2011, the Toronto Police Service issued a news release regarding a man
wanted in connection with a shooting investigation.

Cordell Cartledge may be hiding in the GTA or Montreal

Judicial authorization to release a Young Offender photograph of the accused has now
expired. That authorization prohibits the publication of the photograph of the accused, which
was taken when he was a Young Offender, after 5 p.m., on Tuesday, March 6, 2012.

It is alleged that:
− the suspect confronted a man over a parking dispute
− the dispute escalated and shot was fired at the man
A Canada Wide Warrant has been issued for the arrest for Cordell Cartledge, 19, of Toronto.
He is described as having a light−black complexion, 6’1”, 230 lbs., with dark−black hair, often
worn in cornrows.
Police believe the suspect could be in the GTA or in the Montreal area.

Toronto: Danny Correa arrested in sexual assault on 13 year old

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest in a sexual
assault investigation.

On Tuesday, March 6, 2012, the Sex Crime Unit, with the assistance of officers from 23
Division, arrested a man in connection with a sexual assault investigation at 4500 Jane Street.

As a result of the news release, police obtained information leading to the identity of the
accused.
It is alleged that on Wednesday, February 22, 2012, between 10:47 p.m. and 11:04 p.m., a man sexually assaulted a 13−year old girl on the elevator
Danny Correa, 26, of Toronto, has been charged with Sexual Assault.
