Immigrant investors should pay more, minister says

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney wants to make wealthy investors pay more for the privilege of Canadian permanent residence, launching a series of consultations in Vancouver Friday on how to retool the program to better benefit taxpayers.

“We think that program has been massively underselling Canada,” Kenney told The Sun’s editorial board on Friday. “There are millions of millionaires around the world who would like to immigrate to Canada and we could do much more in generating economic benefit from those who come in through such a program.”

Toronto: Jaivoan Cromwell was known to police

 

Toronto EMS treated Cromwell, who had been shot in the chest. He was taken to Sunnybrook hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Cromwell was known to the police. He was arrested in Windsor in the fall for threatening and having a dangerous weapon. He was due in court next month and according to his own Twitter account expected to be back in jail.

Toronto – Police were called to the Woolner Avenue and Jane Street area Thursday night concerning a man who had collapsed. He became the 12th person to be listed on the homicide rolls for 2012 in Toronto.
Once at the scene police located a man with a gunshot wound to his chest in front of 251 Woolner Avenue. He had left where he was shot to collapse in front of a local convenience store. Two men were seen running from the scene westbound on Woolner.
The victim, Jaivoan Cromwell, 19, was rushed to hospital where he died from his injuries.
Cromwell was known to the police. He was arrested in Windsor in the fall for threatening and having a dangerous weapon. He was due in court next month and according to his own Twitter account expected to be back in jail.

A Brampton woman facing a second-degree murder charge in the death of her sister-in-law made her first court appearance Saturday.

Mandeep Punia, 35, stood in the prisoner’s box and nodded when the judge asked her if she understood the charges against her.

Punia is accused of murdering her brother’s pregnant wife, 27-year-old Poonam Litt, who went missing in 2009.

MONTREAL – Paola Ortiz, a refugee claimant who was deported last September despite the fact she testified she was at risk of being abused by her police officer husband in Mexico, returned to Montreal Friday for an emotional reunion with her two children, both Canadian-born.

Ortiz was able to fly back from Mexico after she had been granted permanent resident status.

The scene Friday morning at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport was an emotional one.

Friends, family and members of the immigration activist group Solidarity Without Borders were there to greet her.

MONTREAL — Kankou Keita and her five children are not going back to Guinea quite yet.

The deported family arrived at Trudeau airport Sunday afternoon to board a plane to Morocco as part of the family’s forced returned to Guinea. But they did not board their flight.

One of her daughters fell ill and was transported to hospital. The girl fell to the ground in a sort of trance. She was brought to hospital, accompanied by her mother.
