A 17-year-old boy has been charged with first-degree murder following what police say was a homicide early Sunday morning outside a branch of the Markham Public Library.

Officers found a 28-year-old man suffering from grave wounds outside the Markham Village Library, at Highway 7 and Markham Road, at around 3 a.m.

He was still breathing and was taken to hospital by ambulance. He died shortly after from his injuries, which police said were likely the result of being stabbed.

Authorities identified the victim as Markham resident Allen Constance. An autopsy on his body is scheduled for Monday.

Later Sunday morning, police arrested the teenaged suspect and charged him with murder. He is slated to appear in youth court on Monday. Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act forbids publishing his identity.

Lorna Salzman and 5 possible solutions to curb overpopulation

The Unnameable Crisis: Overpopulation
by Lorna Salzman
The initial and most severe consequences of overpopulation will be felt by those countries and regions that are the most overpopulated. This is a point that the deniers overlook. Overpumping of aquifers, drought, floods, desertification, etc., which are clustered in Africa, Pakistan and India, are due to the clearing of forests for firewood, which in turn prevents soils from retaining rainwater, and to agricultural practices that necessitate maximum food production to feed local populations (and often primarily for export). The overpumping of deep aquifers and the threat to food supplies is one of the most important topics in World on the Edge by Lester Brown, and is clearly a response to overpopulation.

Montreal: Wealthy Tamil Andrew Mahendrarajah Antonipillai murdered upon his return to Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan military behind slaying of Montrealer: Reports

Canadian reportedly murdered and mutilated in Sri Lanka

MONTREAL – The Sri Lankan military is thought to be involved in the murder of a Canadian citizen of Tamil origin, according to journalists in Sri Lanka.

The founding editor of a nationalist Tamil news organization told QMI Agency Sunday that his journalists on the ground in northern Sri Lanka reported that the Montreal man was murdered after trying to reclaim property seized by the military.

Andrew Mahendrarajah Antonipillai, 53, was found dead in northern Sri Lanka in early May, his family told QMI Agency on Saturday.

Jeya Kopinath, 42, founding editor of TamilNet, a Tamil nationalist news site, said his journalists reported that Antonipillai’s throat was slit and his penis cut off, just outside the northern Sri Lankan town of Kilinochchi.

Kopinath said that Antonipillai owned eight stores in Kilinochchi, which is the former headquarters of the separatist group, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), and an area that Kopinath said is heavily militarized. The government declared victory over the LTTE – also known as the Tamil Tigers – in 2009 after 26 years of war.

Kopinath spoke to QMI from Norway, where he edits his news site that is read internationally. TamilNet focuses on stories pertaining to Sri Lanka’s Tamil minority and has been criticized for being too pro-Tamil Tiger and highly critical of the government and military.

At least two of Antonipillai’s shops were seized by the military, which were leasing them out to a local food company, Kopinath said. The TamilNet editor told QMI Agency that the military offered Antonipillai money in return for the stores, but they were rebuked.

Antonipillai was also arguing with local military officials over electricity for a house that he was building in a town outside Kilinochchi, Kopinath said.

EDMONTON – A former RCMP officer accused of shooting his wife to death at their Edmonton home is seeking to be found not guilty as a result of being mentally ill at the time.

Tirth Sehmbi, 39, is charged with second-degree murder in the July 10, 2010, slaying of Rajpinder Kaur Sehmbi.

In Court of Queen’s Bench Friday, defence lawyer Mike Danyluik said an agreed statement of facts would be submitted in the case on Sept. 17 and the matter would then proceed to a contested hearing to decide whether or not Sehmbi should be found not priminally responsible.

In earlier court proceedings, Sehmbi could be seen visibly shaking as he sat handcuffed and shackled.

Sehmbi has been held in custody at Alberta Hospital and there have been previous court orders for psychiatric assessments to determine whether he was a potential candidate for a not criminally responsible finding.

The 30-year-old victim was found dead in the southeast Edmonton home the couple shared with their two young sons. The boys were not home at the time of the death.

Matthew Coutts, ctvtoronto.ca

Six people arrested in a series of raids earlier this week have been charged in connection to last year’s violent robbery of an armoured truck, police said on Friday.

Toronto police confirmed that a series of pre-dawn raids executed on Thursday resulted in the arrest of six people who are believed to have stolen $1 million from an armoured truck.

A dozen search warrants were executed on homes in Toronto as well as the Regions of York and Durham, resulting in the combined arrests of 13 people.

Staff Insp. Mike Earl of the Toronto police hold-up squad said six of those people have been charged in connection to the armoured truck robbery.

Another seven people were arrested and face charges associated with the trafficking and possession of narcotics.

During the series of raids, police recovered a Glock 17 that was taken from one of the guards at the time of the truck robbery. Another handgun stolen during the robbery has not been recovered.

Police said 800 grams of cocaine, 200 grams of ketamine and 240 grams of crystal meth was also seized in the raids.

Police continue to search for another suspect connected to the Nov. 18, 2011 armoured truck robbery.

Lee Ming, who also goes by the names Anthony Lee and Jason Smith, as well as the nickname “Legal,” is still wanted by police.

More than $1 million was stolen from a Garda armoured truck outside a bank in Scarborough, in what police described as a professional and organized attack.
