A taxi driver has been found guilty of two charges in a 2008 incident that cost a cyclist his leg, Lucy Lopez reports.

Sultan Ahmed was found guilty Thursday of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and dangerous driving causing bodily harm, but was found not guilty of more significant charges against him.

In November 2008, Ahmed reversed his car, pinning a cyclist against a pole. The cyclist had to have his leg amputated as a result.

A Hindu temple has been fined $301,869 by the Canada Revenue Agency for sending money to “non-qualified donees,” which include a group that Ottawa alleges was part of a support network for the Tamil Tigers.

The Hindu Mission of Mississauga, which is a registered charity, sent money to an overseas charity in the aftermath of the December 2004 tsunami, which devastated part of Sri Lanka.

The temple sent $84,604 to the Tamils Rehabilitation Organization — known as TRO — in Sri Lanka, in the fiscal period that ended in May 2005.

During the same period of time, the organization also sent money to the Sri Lanka-based North and East Community Development Organization, which the CRA believes “was affiliated with, and supported the projects of, the TRO.”

Reem Hameed desperately scours the internet each day for news about her sister and other Iraqi refugees who have been accepted to come to Canada but who are now trapped by the conflict in Syria.

Hameed, who lives in Richmond Hill, Ont., is among hundreds of private sponsors, including church and community groups, who have agreed to support refugees from Iraq.

But hundreds of the refugees, including Hameed’s sister, Lula, and her two sons, are now caught in the growing violence in Syria. Hameed says the danger grows every day. Last month, two large explosions damaged her sister’s home. The explosion also hit a bus that Lula’s son normally takes to school.

Former Nanaimo city councillor Bill Holdom believes immigrants “will finally become the Canadians who replace us”

Bill Holdom: "In other words, immigrant caregivers are helping to keep our healthcare system afloat."

Immigrants will play a vital role

This point hit home recently when my brothers and I had to decide how our 94-year-old mother should be cared for after a “heart episode” and a stay in hospital. (…)
