Toronto: Male with brown skin sought in East York sex assault

TORONTO, Ont. – Police would like the public to be aware after a sexual assault in the East York area.

The attack happened in the area of Monarch Park Avenue and Strathmore Boulevard, near Danforth and Coxwell Avenues, around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

It’s alleged a woman who was walking alone in the area was followed by a male suspect. That suspect then grabbed the woman from behind, tackling her to the ground.

The woman was able to kick and scratch her way out of the suspect’s hold. The suspect then fled on foot toward Danforth Avenue

He is described as a male with brown skin, of either African or East Indian decent. He is approximately 22 to 28 years old and stands 5’7″ to 5’9″ with short black hair.

He was last seen wearing a yellow golf shirt and may have suffered scratches on his neck from the victim.

Anyone with information on the attack is being asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

A Vancouver criminal lawyer representing one of the men accused of smuggling Tamil migrants aboard the Ocean Lady in 2009 plans to argue the charges are unconstitutional.

Peter Edelmann said Section 117 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, which criminalizes organizing, aiding or abetting undocumented persons to get into Canada, is so broad and vague it can apply to most legitimate refugees.

METRO VANCOUVER — A corrupt border guard and the cocaine smuggler who bribed him were handed lengthy jail terms in B.C. Supreme Court Friday.

Former Canada Border Services Agency guard Baljinder Kandola got a 15 year sentence and Shminder Johal, the “overseer” of a cocaine smuggling ring, was handed an 18-year term.

Both were convicted last month on a series of charges, including cocaine smuggling, conspiracy, breach of trust and bribery.

Neither Kandola, 40, nor Johal, 38, accepted Justice Selwyn Romilly’s invitation to address the packed courtroom in New Westminster Friday morning before they were led away by sheriffs.
