An Ottawa physician continues to treat male patients as he faces allegations of sexual harassment and abuse against a receptionist at an Appletree Medical walk-in clinic. Dr. Megeri Ede is currently based at an Appletree clinic at 368 Slater St. near Lyon Street in downtown Ottawa.

He is also listed as working at an Appletree clinic on Merivale Road and the Rideau-Friel Medical Centre on Rideau Street. According to a notice of hearing filed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), Ede is accused of sexually harassing one woman while she worked at the clinic and while she was one of his patients.

The document accuses Ede of hugging and kissing the woman, stroking her breasts, making sexual remarks and touching her inappropriately through her clothes. The allegations date back to April and May of 2009 but the notice of hearing was not filed until April 2011. Ede is scheduled for a hearing in Toronto that begins Sept. 24.

Male patients only

Since June 2011, the CPSO has restricted Ede’s practice so he can only treat male patients while alone. He can treat female patients but only with a “female practice monitor,” documents show. Ede continues to work at the Slater Street clinic, sometimes as the only doctor on staff, which has forces female patients to travel elsewhere for medical care. “This physician has a practice that is restricted to males only. This is dictated by the CPSO and is not a preference or choice,” Alison Green, spokeswoman for Appletree Medical Group, wrote in an email.

Ede also faces a discipline hearing in February for allegations he failed to comply with the CPSO’s “medical records policy,” saying he showed “disgraceful, dishonourable or unprofessional conduct.” That includes allegations he failed to maintain the CPSO’s standard of practice with 25 patients from January 2010 forward.

Ede could not be reached at his home on Friday and the CPSO said he has not filed a response to the allegations, which have not been proven. Disciplined in 2005 This is not the first time Ede has faced a disciplinary hearing. In 2005, he admitted to encouraging patients to join a financial scheme while practising in Petawawa, Ont., west of Ottawa. Ede told the CPSO he did not benefit financially from the scheme but said he tried to talk people into joining him in the venture in 2003. He was fined $5,000 and forced to take a course on ethics. Ede, who specializes in internal medicine, received his medical licence in 1978, according to CPSO documents, after graduating from the University of New Edinburgh in Scotland in 1964. 25875-Ede, M. 10/10/11 3 3 2 2 Saw Dr. Ede a number of years ago. He was ok, but not particularly helpful. Now I see there are allegations against him of sexual assault and allegations that he “is incompetent and/or failed to meet the standard of practice of the profession in his care of twenty-five patients.” Since June 2011, he has had the following practice restriction against him: “Effective immediately, Dr. Megeri Ede shall not engage in any professional encounters with female patients of any age, in any jurisdiction, unless the patient encounter takes place in the presence of a female practice monitor who has been approved by the College, and unless the other requirements set out in his Undertaking to the College are fulfilled. For further clarity, Dr. Ede may not be alone with any female patient, during any professional encounter.” See http://www.cpso.on.ca/docsearch/details.aspx?vie…. 9/2/11 1 3 3 1 he made me wait a long time and when he walked in….he was singing very loudly some song of his country. He scared the hell out of my parents and I. We though he was crazy. It’s also sketchy how he sees patients at the very back of the clinic where the storage rooms were. Anyway he asked me a whole bunch of random questions not related to my illness. I had a leg problem and he touched my cheek and was like ” oh your cheek is hot, lets take your temperature and listen to your heart”. I’ve seen many doctors before about my illness. Temperature and heart rate is definitely unrelated. Logged in users can respond to this rating

5/4/11 3 4 5 5 Dr. Ede took the time to discuss options and to explain things simply but completely. He treated me like a human being, not like a list of facts. I thought he was terrific. Logged in users can respond to this rating

3/21/11 5 1 1 1 I waited 5 hrs. I went for probable haemorrhoids. When he finally comes to the room, without looking, he prescribed me something to soften stools. Then when I ask if he could check and see if it was really haemorrhoids he said I suggest to you come back another day a see another Dr. because you waited too long today!!!! I insisted, and when he finally checks, he said I had UTERIN FIBROME!!!!! Logged in users can respond to this rating

3/8/11 4 1 1 1 I had the misfortune of seeing Megeri Ede (I wouldn’t call him a doctor) 4 times during a terrible time in my life when I had mononucleosis, Swine Flu, a period that simply would not stop for about 6 months which caused severe anemia. (Continuous menstruation, heavy flow). Ede has a very hard time working the electronic tablet chart and had pulled up someone else’s chart and then managed to prtd/a style=”border-width: 0px; vertical-align: top; text-align: left; color: #000044; padding: 10px 5px 5px;”escribe a different woman my prescription and ask me about all her symptoms, and printed me off a prescription in her name instead of pulling up my chart (which I DID specify). His attention to detail is terrible. I also saw him during that time because I needed a sick note to prove to my employer I had been sick, and so that I could defer an exam at University during that time, and for each Sick Note, he charges $20.00-25.00 each, and accepts CASH ONLY. He doesn’t seem to care very much about his patients. Do NOT see this Doc for medical help unless you want to watch a musical performance. Logged in users can respond to this rating

2/28/11 2 1 2 2 If you have a choice, do not see this dude. You will wait hours solely because he is extremely slow, which probably has somethign to do with the fact that he will sing for 20 minutes as he very slowly writes in your chart. I didn’t feel like I was dealing with a medical professional, I felt like I was the victim of some kind of stupid joke. Which is NOT how you want to feel when you’re already sick! Slow, awkward, unprofessional. Logged in users can respond to this rating

2/8/11 1 1 1 1 I saw this doctor at Appletree Medical downtown. After waiting 4 hours to be seen, this man was downright abusive to me and I am filing a complaint with the College. He barked at me several times to “stop crying” when I was trying to explain to him about my chronic migraines and he accused me of being a narcotic seeker (when I was not asking for any narcotics). I brought all my medical history (neurologist’s reports) for him to at least glance at as he would not know me or my condition and he yelled “I don’t care about your papers” and then kept saying “how many times to do I have to tell you I am not a family doctor” – which I know but new to the province and having trouble finding one – so needed interim help and management – which I explained to him but he flat out denied me help. He wrote an Rx for something I should NOT be taking and refused all other requests. He was rude and abusive towards me. Didn’t matter that I was in a crisis/crying. Animals are treated better than I was! Read the responses to this rating

1/21/11 2 1 1 1 One of the worst “doctors” I have ever seen. I came in with severe abdominal pain and left without any answers or anything to relieve the pain. He sang throughout the examination, asked me strange personal questions and told me it could take a week or so to get any results. So, basically, I’m expected to suffer for a week and not know what’s going on?! Even after the urine sample came back with blood and protein, I had to press him on what was going on and what that could mean. He didn’t seem to know how to proceed and what to do. After a very bad, sore night, I went to another clinic that diagnosed a kidney infection and began treatment right away, with success. Logged in users can respond to this rating

12/10/10 5 3 1 1 What a CREEP. I went in to get a referral to physio for a chronic injury and ended up on the table having my leg ‘massaged’ while he did what,I don’t know! Then he listened to my heart after fumbling around under my shirt. Then he looked into my eyes and told me I was close to anemic?!! And, let’s see, oh right, then he started massaging my upper chest while talking about my lack of iron and not paying any attention to what he was doing and brushing ‘accidentally’ against my breasts. Then he stood at the side of the table rambling on about my iron all the while with his hands on my hip and stomach. Then he started feeling around on my stomach and said ‘any problem in here?’ In the end he gave me a referral to a specialist that he chose randomly from a list that’s incredibly far from where I live and I don’t have a car. Later, in the hall, the resident suggested a closer and better specialist, but he refused to change it. Overall, a really horrible experience. Read the responses to this rating

10/10/10 5 2 5 2 Well, it was certainly an interesting experience. I just went in to get a refill on a prescription. I didn’t expect to get serenaded… He’s actually a decent singer. Anyways, he was a truly likeable guy, but I was not overly confident in his abilities. He seemed a bit unsure about what my prescription was despite it being fairly common. Perhaps a symptom of his age? Logged in users can respond to this rating

4/27/10 1 1 1 1 I brought my 7 months old son to the clinic. We live in QC and when we were called, the receptionist advised us that Ede only accepted CASH. After arguing with the receptionist, she accepted our debit card. While in the examining room Ede came in and asked when I paid this amount. When I said “just now” he went in to the hallway, found the receptionist and yelled at her for taking debit. He then said to us that if he would have known that we didn’t have cash, he would not have seen us. He then started singing and did not listen to my concerns. He said my son was dehydrated and had a small cold. When I asked what he suggested I do, he said “I don’t know”. REALLY?!!! Didn’t ask how long he was sick or what other symptoms he had. He spent time playing with him and was very rude in that he did not answer ANY of my questions. I walked out, took my son to CHEO and he was diagnosed with an acute ear infection and given antibiotics for 7 days! This man should not be practicing in Canada! 3/15/10 1 1 1 1 Dr. Ede has to be the worst doctor ever. I had an appointment with him to examine some bumps on my genitals. He determined that they were a sexually transmitted disease and insinuated that my fiance, whom I have been with for nine years, was being unfaithful. This was not the only inappropriate comment he made: seeing a mole on my arm, he “joked” that I would remain a fiance. Not only was his diagnosis incorrect (I sought out a dermatologist following my appointment who determined that the bumps were merely small cysts, not contagious at all–which would explain why my fiance never contracted them), but his prescription was ridiculous: he instructed me to cut out the bumps with a small knife, which he provided. If anyone else is ever advised to do this by Dr. Ede, please do not attempt it. My dermatologist told me that it can be very dangerous to cut into the genital area, as you risk infection. Luckily I didn’t heed his advice and went to a more knowledgable professional. Logged in users can respond to this rating

10/19/09 1 2 1 1 I went to the clinic to follow up after a sexual assault. Dr. Ede asked me inappropriate and judgmental questions about my marital status, whether alcohol was involved, etc. In my opinion, Dr. Ede needs training on how to handle sexual assault trauma. My meeting with him further traumatized me. Logged in users can respond to this rating

4/22/08 2 3 2 2 Dr. Ede works very slowly; it took him several minutes just to copy my name down onto the prescription. He refused to refer me to a dermatologist despite being unable to even tell me what my skin condition is called, let alone assure me that the prescription wi/divll be at all effective. 2/5/08 3 1 1 1 Info found via the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, i.e. Past Findings: http://www.cpso.on.ca/Doctor_Search/findings.asp?… On March 22, 2005 the Discipline Committee found that Dr. Ede committed professional misconduct under paragraph 1(1)33 of Ontario Regulation 856/93, in that he engaged in conduct or an act or acts relevant to the practice of medicine that, having regard to all the circumstances, would reasonably be regarded by members as disgraceful, dishonourable or unprofessional by encouraging patients to participate in a financial scheme in which he was involved. 9/27/07 3 1 2 1 Spent 5 hours at this clinic either waiting (which is nothing new) or being told I was fat (without being given any other solution than to buy a treadmill, once this doctor realized I’m a depressed agoraphobe). He asked about my family and when I assured him that we really don’t have any antecedents of obesity, he just couldn’t figure it out. He looked at me like I was either lying or out of my mind. Only then did he take my pressure and tell me it was too high. I couldn’t help it, I burst into tears! Doctor goes, “Why are you crying?” All I could do was remind him that I have chronic depression and agoraphobia. And still, he was all perplexed. He’s going to refer me to a nutritionist, of all things, and write me a $20 letter for me to submit to ODSP to see if they’ll consider chipping in for a treadmill, when all I wanted was to get my prescription and go home. Overall, he wasn’t helpful at all. Logged in users can respond to this rating

1/13/07 3 4 3 No call back on my test results. They did not have results after 7 days. Booked another appointment to get my results (they wouldnt tell me over the phone, another charge to Ontario). They had to call the lab to get faxed resuls. In the interview room, he sang to me while he was writting my chart. I requested a CT scan for my lower back and loss of feel on my right leg and he rejected my request. Told me i dont need it, loose weight. I left and drove to Ogdensburg Hospital in New York to get an MRI within 72 hours. Free clinics in Canada, no thanks, rather pay and get service. Now have medical doctor in New York. There is definitely something wrong with this mans’ head–he’s going koo-koo. Do not allow him to practice any longer. He has proven himself a danger to patients and incompetent to perform his duties as well as a blatant disregard of rulings from the governing body. His symptoms of disconnect come and go . He needs mental help and he needs to be stopped from practicing.

I took my 4 year old son to see him in March of this year and had no knowledge of any charges against him. As far as I am concerned he should not be practising at all as he told me my son had a heart murmur and could need open heart surgery and then when I almost passed out from the shock he made me lay down and started asking very personal questions about my marital status and relationship history. It was creepy and inappropriate and when I took my son to his family doctor and a paediatrician they could hear nothing that resembled a heart murmur. Criminal charges should be pressed as it is disgraceful that he can abuse his position and then just simply resign.

Weirdest Doctor ever. Sang loudly, even while examining me, extremely slow and totally incompetent. I thought I was seriously being punked. Appetree says he is not allowed to treat females without an attendant present since June 2011. WRONG! Last time I checked, I was female and he saw me twice last month! With no attendant. Should have been warned. Wow.
